Unlocking Smarter PPC Management with Google Ads Scripts

For many marketing directors and team leads, managing Google Ads can feel like a constant balancing act. You’re navigating budget caps, keyword strategies, landing page performance, and Google’s ever-evolving “recommendations.” If you’ve ever questioned whether you’re spending more time interpreting campaign data than acting on it, you’re not alone.

Many businesses turn to third-party automation tools to ease the workload, only to find themselves locked into expensive monthly subscriptions. But what if there was a way to automate much of your account oversight and performance monitoring — without the added software cost?

That’s where Google Ads Scripts come in.

Google Ads Script to improve your google Ads Campaigns.

The Reality of Managing Google Ads Today

Google Ads campaigns require consistent attention to perform well. Left unattended, even a well-structured campaign can suffer from budget inefficiencies, performance drops, or outdated creative. Google’s own optimization suggestions are helpful in theory, but often prioritize increased spend rather than meaningful business results.

In my experience, automated suggestions from Google should never replace strategy. Campaign performance is at its best when a human expert is still steering the ship — especially one who understands how performance ties back to your unique business goals.

Why I Recommend Keeping a Human in the Loop

Automated platforms and algorithms don’t always align with your growth strategy. They can’t necessarily understand seasonal patterns, customer lifetime value, or nuances in your positioning. They’re also not equipped to notice when a campaign’s underperformance is tied to an issue outside of Ads — such as a broken landing page or shifting market demand.

That’s why I rely on augmented automation: tools that help you monitor more and stress less, while still empowering your team to make strategic, data-informed decisions. And that’s where Google Ads Scripts shine.

What Are Google Ads Scripts?

Google Ads Scripts are lightweight snippets of JavaScript that let you automate tasks, monitor account changes, and generate reports. They run directly inside your Google Ads account, and once implemented, they don’t require a monthly subscription.
These scripts allow you to:

  • Monitor key performance indicators 24/7
  • Receive alerts for anomalies or errors
  • Automate routine tasks like budget checks or broken link monitoring
  • Summarize large data sets to aid decision-making

In short, they give your marketing team the tools to manage Google Ads campaigns more efficiently — and effectively — without needing to outsource control.

5 Scripts We Use to Drive Better PPC Outcomes

To get you started on improving your Google Ads management I’m going to share my 5 favorite scripts.  These are  easy to implement, and low risk as they provide information but don’t make changes to your account.

Link Checker

This script regularly checks that your ads are pointing to live, working pages. It’s particularly useful when your web and ad teams are separate, as it helps catch 404 errors before your customers do. Broken links don’t just waste spend — they hurt your credibility.

If you’re interested in digging into the details Nils Rooijmans has a great example script here.

I run this check once a week on accounts with less complex structures.  If you have a larger website with many landing pages or products you may want to run a similar script daily.

Budget Monitoring

Our custom scripts help ensure your daily and monthly spend stays on track. We use them to flag significant deviations and alert us early. This helps us adjust spend pacing in real-time, without manual tracking.

This script is scheduled daily.  Even though our script runs daily, I usually only check the reports once or twice a week.  If I get an account account anomaly alert, my budget report is the second report I like to check.

Google Ads Account Anomaly Detector

Sudden spikes or drops in impressions, clicks, or conversions often signal a deeper issue. This script compares today’s metrics to your 4-week running daily average. If the variance is significant, we get an alert. From there, we investigate — checking bids, disabled ads, broken conversions, or changes in competition.

I schedule this daily on most of my accounts.  If you have situations where extreme variances are normal you may want to adjust your schedule.

Quality Score Checker

A low-quality score can silently erode your results. This script identifies keywords with low scores by analyzing:

  • Expected click-through rate vs actual
  • Ad relevance according to Google
  • Landing page experience

If your scores fall below 7, we recommend taking action — from updating ad copy to improving page load speed or message match.

If you aren’t already familiar with quality scores here’s a great 2 minute video that explains how to check your quality scores.

We schedule this script to run weekly for our clients.  Planning corrective actions, implementing those changes, and seeing results takes time.  Running the script more frequently won’t necessarily provide better results, or increase the time it takes to see improvments.

Negative Keyword Suggestions

We use this script to flag keywords that are driving cost but not delivering value. It’s an excellent tool for pruning underperforming keywords, especially when used alongside the quality score checker. We advise waiting until your campaigns are stabilized before making permanent exclusions.

The schedule for this script is largely budget dependent.  If you are spending significant dollars every day (+$1,000 a day) it might be worth running such a script daily to identify lower performing keywords and prune them out quickly.  If you are spending under $3,000 a month, it may take a few weeks to get any meaningful suggestions as you build up our data set.

The fastest way to identify a mis-managed account is to check for negative keywords. Accounts with no negative keywords usually need a tune up.

Client Success: Integrated Therapy and Coaching

One of our clients, Integrated Therapy and Coaching, saw a major lift in performance after we deployed the Negative Keyword Suggestion script. By identifying and eliminating inefficient keywords, we helped streamline their budget toward high-intent search terms. This adjustment was a key contributor in improving their monthly conversions by over 20%.

For a team that was spending valuable time sifting through data manually, the results were both immediate and measurable.

Are Scripts Right for Your Campaign?

If your business is running enough ads that it’s difficult to stay on top of everything manually — scripts can help. They’re particularly useful for:

  • Ecommerce businesses managing large product catalogs
  • Lead generation campaigns with multiple funnels
  • Multi-location brands with regional ad strategies

If you’re spending more time deciphering your data than acting on it, then it’s probably time to put some smart automation in place.
